Soft Song (1974) for oboe and soundtracks
Soft Song is a musical address to Federico Fellini, the ltalian filmmaker. In a preface to the score Bruynèl writes: "Amice, From my studio in one of the last farmhouses on Utrecht's outskirts, slowIy being encircled by the battalions of our newest architecture, I offer you Soft Song for oboe and soundtracks, to me a melody of wonderment at the unreality of our civilization anno 1974. Transformation catches my ear. There is softness in the air. I could scream, Federico, and I care. Our sect, contemporary music, is changing too. It is long past midnight for the dodecaphonians, the serialists are biting their nails, and the Cage in the States is empty. So let me try to please your ears with my oboe-hen, with reconstructed crickets and with water as real as Die Forelle von dem Franz." Commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Culture.
